Smith, supervising animator of Dr. Facilier, referred to the character as the "lovechild" of his four favorite Disney Villains: Captain Hook from Peter Pan (1953), Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty (1959), Cruella De Vil from One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961), and Judge Doom from Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988).
